British Canoeing, Sea Kayak Award
Personal Performance Award Description. This award is designed to develop your skills and ability to apply appropriate decision making for an enjoyable and safe day out on the sea.
Extended Award Description The Sea Kayak Award endorses your skill, judgment and the decision making required for a successful day on the sea. You will be confident in planning and undertaking journeys on the sea, in winds up to and including force 3 and/or tides up to 1 Knot, using sea kayaks or sit on tops, in tidal or non-tidal environments, with proficient skills to be in control throughout. Your award should be seen as a sound basis for building the experience and knowledge associated with Coastal Sea Kayak Award holders.
To have an enjoyable day out on the sea, we need to make some key decisions to ensure we are in the right place at the right time.
Key factors influencing our decisions include swell, the weather, the tide and features of the location we choose. We can take each of these factors into consideration and ask ourselves some questions to ensure the correct decisions are made:
The BC Sea kayak personal performance award is suitable for paddlers who wish to have the skills and knowledge to be a competent member of a led sea kayaking group in moderate sea conditions with winds less than force 3.
This course also will help build those unshakably solid base of foundation skills that will underpin your future performance in rough water and for the next level of BC work you decide to do.
The nature of the assessment is that of a continuous evaluation through out a suitable days paddle. Watching to see that strokes are executed effectively in mild conditions to the BC standards with a firm commitment to owning your strokes, properly controlling your boat, rescues / towing, and the strong beginnings of understanding your environment in which you are journeying in.
It is also an appropriate level of performance for paddlers to begin working towards the BC Sea Kayak Leader Award. (Old 4 Star Sea Leader). Continually evaluating the choices we make creates a natural evolution of decision making ability. When we reach a certain point in this, it may be worth considering moving onto the Coastal Sea Kayak Award and the Sea Kayak Leader Award (4 Star)
The course can either be done as a one day assessment, if you feel you are at the standard, or alternatively a two day course. The two day course provides an initial day of refining and refreshing / refining your sea kayaking skills.
Course Cost $150.00/pp
