We are always looking forward to this running this event. It has snowed for this event in the past. Snowed? That’s right. Don’t worry the water temps are still Above 65 degrees.
So how does all this work?
October here in Southern New England, the seas and winds are rocking. Always windy, mostly Westerly’s, and the event is timed with Spring tide flows with a safe mid day max flood that pushes 3-5 knots. But we have had for the last 3 years a Nor Easter storm. We are always on the water in reasonable venues that are to challenge all abilities.
The event is pitched for the solid intermediate – advanced paddler. Working tide races, long downwind runs with following seas, and Shore break surf. All working from a single starting location in Stonington Borough CT on Fishers Island Sound. The Eastern end of Long Island sound and Fishers Island sounds have the highest current flows just shy of the Bay Of Fundy. So quite fun really, and waters are still warm.
Typically, 3 groups sort themselves out in the morning after the weather briefing with top Rough Water coaches that are known for tide races. Hence, the reason I work the Anglesey symposium and have some of my great friends and coaches from there to help me run my gig. Matched up with our rough water local guides who know when things happen.
So these are our local waters and we take pride in training paddlers looking to advance there skills, and maybe some day even experience the waters of the Irish Sea, N. Wales Anglesey, as we share similar water features, like tide races and over falls.
Paddlers either stay about in the Borough or the next town over and are responsible for their own lodging and meals, but we provide the fun guided discovery coaching, and the experience in big water.
We can provide NDK (SKUK) boats for those traveling afar without your boats.
Off Water Evening Activities
Friday evening we have the big group fish fry dinner at the Holy Ghost Society dinner hall, with everyone from this old fishing town. A very cool time. Most paddlers find them mingling about with the locals, which is fun to see. Saturday evening Harry Whelan UK London, who hold the fastest paddling time around Ireland, paddled with Jeff Alan. Harry will have a quick talk and showing the release CD video of this epic journey. Location is the New England Science and Sailing Foundation building in the Borough at 70 Water Street.
You can sign up below Via Credit Card or the Old Fashion way, but emailing and or by phone. Both ways we will email out to you your registration forms.
